Join us in honoring the 2018 Woman Lawyer of the Year: the Honorable Anna Blackburne-Rigsby, Chief Judge of the DC Court of Appeals. Chief Judge Blackburne-Rigsby became Chief Judge of the D.C. Court of Appeals in March 2017. In that capacity, she chairs the Joint Committee on Judicial Administration for the District of Columbia court system. Chief Judge Blackburne-Rigsby previously served as an Associate Judge on the D.C. Court of Appeals, a position for which she was nominated by President George W. Bush in August 2006. During her tenure as an Associate Judge, she chaired the District of Columbia Courts’ Standing Committee on Fairness and Access, and served on the District of Columbia’s Access to Justice Commission. Click here to read more.

We are pleased to announce Congresswoman Jackie Speier will give keynote remarks at our 2018 Annual Dinner. Congresswoman Speier recently introduced bipartisan, comprehensive legislation to prevent and respond to sexual harassment in Congress. H.R. 4396, The Member and Employee Training and Oversight On (ME TOO) Congress Act, will require more transparency, overhaul the complaint process, and provide better support for victims and whistleblowers. The bill also requires mandatory annual training for Members and staff, implements climate surveys to show the true scope of this problem, gives interns and fellows the same protections as full-time staff, and ends forced mediation.

Congresswoman Speier was named to Newsweek’s list of 150 “Fearless Women” in the world. She was the first member of Congress to advocate for fundamental reforms to end the epidemic of sexual assault in the military and on college campuses, and she is leading the fight against sexism in the fields of science and technology. She is also at the forefront of efforts to end discrimination and close the gender pay gap through ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment and passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act.

The Annual Dinner theme is “March On.” The WBA celebrated its Centennial last year and has made great advances in the past century of advancing women lawyers. But the WBA’s work is far from done and its leaders strive to “march on” together to achieve the vision of a world where the WBA does not need to exist: a world where law schools, law firms, and top positions in government and corporations reflect the demographic of our society. A world where every female attorney receives equal pay for the work she performs. A world where both men and women lawyers have the support they need to perform well in the work place and at home with paid family leave. To put it simply, a world where the work of the WBA is complete.

Founded in 1917, the WBA is one of the oldest voluntary bar associations in the United States dedicated to the advancement of women in the law. Our Annual Dinner helps support the ongoing efforts of the WBA to maintain the honor and integrity of the legal profession, to promote the administration of justice, and to advance and protect the interests of women lawyers. Proceeds from the Annual Dinner also help support the WBA Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose mission is to leverage the generosity of lawyers and friends to support nonprofits that serve the legal and related needs of women and girls in the DC Metropolitan community
