The Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia (WBA) values the privacy of our members, website visitors, and event registrants, and we take steps to protect their privacy.

What Information Does WBA Collect?
WBA collects information via the website and membership and event registration processes. We do not ask for more personal information than is necessary to complete the membership and/or registration process and to provide the best services possible.
From General Users: WBA does not collect any personal information from users browsing its website. Only aggregate data—such as the number of hits per page, source of visit (e.g., search engine, direct link), type of browsing device and browser, etc.—are collected. Aggregate data are only used for internal and marketing purposes and do not provide any personally identifying information.
From WBA Members, Event Registrants, and Other Customers. To gain access to members-only resources and personalized features on wbadc.org, members and other users are asked to register and provide some limited information. This information is submitted voluntarily. WBA asks users to provide their name, organization name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail, years in practice, type of practice and area of interest, law school, bar admissions, committee interest, and payment information. Similar information may be submitted to WBA through membership applications, event registration, and other correspondence.
Additionally, for e-mails sent through WBA’s mass email vendor, WBA collects specific information regarding what the recipient does with that email. For example, whether a recipient opens the message or clicks through to links provided in the message. WBA uses this information to enhance its messages and distribution of those message to its members and other interested parties. This information is not sold or distributed in any other manner.
Most data WBA collects is used only to help us better serve our members, attendees, and visitors. Our primary goal in collecting information from you is to provide you with a smooth, efficient, and customized experience while using our site. It is our general policy to collect and store only personal information that our members, registrants, and visitors knowingly provide.
It is completely optional for users to engage in any activity that necessitates the submission of personally identifiable information. If, however, you do elect to engage in these activities, we may ask that you provide us personal information, such as your name, organization name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail, years in practice, type of practice and area of interest, law school, bar admissions, and committee interest. When signing up for membership or registering for an event, you may be asked to provide a credit card number. Depending upon the activity, some of the information we ask you to provide is identified as mandatory and some as voluntary. If you do not provide the mandatory data with respect to a particular activity, you will not be able to engage in that activity.
This policy covers WBA’s treatment of information that is gathered when our website is accessed or when someone registers for an event. This policy does not apply to the use of personal information by third parties that WBA does not own or control, or to individuals that WBA does not control or manage.
Transmission over the Internet or any wireless network cannot be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect your personally identifiable information, you acknowledge that: (a) there are security and privacy limitations of the Internet which are beyond our control; (b) the security, integrity, and privacy of any and all information and data exchanged between you and us through this site cannot be guaranteed; and (c) any such information and data may be viewed or tampered with in transit by a third party.
How Does WBA Use Data Collected?
WBA uses information voluntarily submitted by members and other customers to improve our web content; to respond to members’ and visitors' interests, needs and preferences; to develop new programming; and improve our marketing and promotional efforts. The WBA is in no way responsible for the accuracy of a user’s information. Therefore, if you enter information incorrectly, the WBA will process the information as entered.
WBA makes member contact information available through the online directory to other members (who are logged in as members). Members can opt out of this listing or edit the information that is available via the directory.
WBA shares event registration lists with our committee and forum co-chairs, Board of Directors, event hosts who require lists for building security, and speakers. Information provided to committee and forum co-chairs and the Board of Directors may include name, organization, email address, and phone number. Co-chairs and Board members are instructed to use the emails ONLY for WBA purposes. Registrants can opt out of having their email shared (see below). Information provided to event hosts who require lists for building security will include name only. Information provided to speakers will include organization only, to allow speakers to plan for the type of attendees that will be present at their session.
WBA is the sole owner of information collected on wbadc.org and through membership and event registration processes. We do not share or sell information with anyone without authorization or consent in ways different from what is disclosed in this policy. WBA does not provide lists to third parties who wish to sell products or services or promote events. In cases where WBA is supporting an event or endorsing a product or service, WBA will convey that information to members via the WBA website or emails sent by the WBA.
Credit Card Account Information. WBA does not disclose credit card account information provided by its members and customers. WBA does not store credit card account information. When members and customers choose to pay using a credit card, WBA submits the information needed to obtain payment to an appropriate merchant service provider.
WBA will take appropriate security measures to protect any and all personal data stored in automated data files against accidental or unauthorized destruction or accidental loss as well as against unauthorized access, alteration, or dissemination.
WBA will disclose personal information about an individual user if we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to comply with an applicable law or valid legal process.
We may use contact information that you provide to send you information about our organization and promotional material from some of our partners, unless you request that information not be sent to you. You may opt-out of receiving WBA emails by following the instructions included in each newsletter or by contacting us by email or postal mail.
We share event registration lists with the committee/forum co-chairs who plan the events so they can keep interested parties informed of future programs. Event registrants can opt out of having their email shared during the registration process.
"Cookies" are small data text files that are stored by your browser on your computer's hard drive. Generally, cookies work by assigning to your computer a unique number that has no meaning outside of our site. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but normally, you will have the ability to edit your browser settings in order to prevent that. A "cookie" stays on your computer until it is deleted and you can remove them by following the directions provided in your browser's "help" files.
Cookies are not used to disseminate significant information about users over the internet or to analyze any information that users have knowingly or unknowingly provided. Not accepting cookies will not cause any of the features of the WBA’s registration to be either non-accessible or less appealing.
