Join the ABA Section of International Law for their 2017 Spring Meeting! The theme for the Meeting is New Leaders, New Laws: 2017 and Beyond. The Section’s Spring Meeting is without a doubt one of the world’s most important gatherings of international lawyers. This event will be a very substantive and timely schedule of CLE programming and networking events including receptions at the Newseum and the Renwick Gallery.

Imagine this – more men in the WBA!  
 
The WBA wants to reach 1,000+ members during our Centennial year! That is our collective goal, and you can be the force that helps make it happen. How, you ask. Well, we are at 950 members at this moment. To help reach our target of 1,000 members by our Centennial Annual Dinner on May 17th, here’s what you can do: 
 
During the month of April, we’re focusing on men for membership! Do you know a man who would benefit from membership? Who doesn’t know a man who can benefit from the WBA, right?! So this month, invite a special man you know to a WBA program (excluding Showcase Events) totally FREE of CHARGE – there are many good choices, as you can see in the event calendar.

We are also hosting a special meet and greet event this month at I Ricchi to welcome interested members. This is a great opportunity to meet WBA members and leadership and learn more about what we are doing. Please note this is a free event to attend. Drinks and food can be purchased individually as desired.

Equal Pay Day symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. Join us for a conversation about closing the gender pay gap. Panelists will discuss how the pay gap operates, particularly for women in law firms; the EEOC’s priorities in wage discrimination; changes that companies and firms can enact to address gaps in compensation and promotion; and HR policies that could similarly decrease the wage gap.

Speaker Biographies: 

Mary Kuntz
is an attorney at Kalijarvi, Chuzi, Newman & Fitch, where she litigates employment matters.  From 1985 until 2006 Ms. Kuntz was a professor of classical languages and literatures and, from 2001 to 2005, she directed the Women's Studies Program at Auburn University.

Kate Mueting is a Partner in the Washington, DC office of Sanford Heisler, LLP.  She represents employees with a wide range of employment claims, including discrimination on the basis of gender, pregnancy, race, and disability and other civil rights claims. 

Maya Raghu is Director of Workplace Equality at the National Women’s Law Center. She works on a range of issues addressing women’s economic security and employment opportunity, including pay equity, pregnancy discrimination and sexual harassment. 

Deb Vagins is Chief of Staff and Principal Attorney Advisor for EEOC Commissioner Burrows and regularly speaks on EEOC priorities in wage discrimination.  Prior to joining the EEOC, she was Senior Legislative Counsel on civil rights for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Speaker Biographies:
Hakeem Jeffries represents the diverse Eighth Congressional District of New York, an area that encompasses large parts of Brooklyn and a section of Queens. Serving his third term in the United States Congress, Rep. Jeffries is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and House Budget Committee.
 
Rep. Jeffries is a Co-Chair of the House Democratic Policy & Communications Committee, having been elected to that position overwhelmingly by his colleagues. In that capacity, he is a member of the Democratic Leadership Team and helps run the messaging apparatus for the House Democrats. He is also the former Whip of the Congressional Black Caucus. Presently, Rep. Jeffries co-chairs the bipartisan Intellectual Property Caucus and is a founder of the Criminal Justice & the Public Safety Caucus.
 
Prior to his election to the Congress, Rep. Jeffries served for six years in the New York State Assembly. In that capacity, he authored laws that included protecting the civil liberties of law-abiding New Yorkers during police encounters, encouraging the transformation of vacant luxury condominiums into affordable homes for working families, and improving the quality of justice in the civil court system.

Aaron Manaigo is Managing Partner at Global Political Solutions, is a former Co-chair to President Trump's Great America PAC and has worked as a political strategist for Republican Party candidates. Mr. Manaigo is the former New York State, Bronx County District Leader {R} 78th Assembly District for two terms from (1995-1998). Mr. Manaigo has over 20 years experience managing projects in the public and private sector. As a business leader he has provided professional services to — Allstate Insurance Co., Quixotic Solutions, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, the U.S. Department of State the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Embassy of Australia, Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, the Embassy of Afghanistan, the Embassy of South Africa, the Embassy of Uganda,  Mobilize for Haiti, U.S. Fast Food Coalition, the Hydrogen Energy Coalition, Universal/Vivendi Corporation, and Hope World Wide.

H.E. Audrey Marks is Jamaica’s thirteenth Ambassador to the United States of America and the Permanent Representative of Jamaica to the Organization of American States (OAS). 
 
Ambassador Marks assumed duties at the Embassy in Washington, D.C. on September 12, 2016.  She previously served in the same capacity for two (2) years from 2010 - 2012, thereby creating history by being the first Jamaican female Ambassador to the USA, and also the first Ambassador to be assigned to the same Post twice. 
 
Prior to assuming her Ambassadorial role, Ambassador Marks, an entrepreneur by profession, started and operated six previous businesses, including a 100-acre banana exporting farm, a transportation company, as well as a real estate sales and development company.  She also operated a Venture Capital Company with diverse investments, including manufacturing, travel and entertainment. 

Jerry Butler was twice elected as IADB Executive Director after serving previously in 2004-2008. He headed a Bahamas-based private consultancy practice providing legal, financial, corporate and business advisory services. His firm specialized in identifying and executing Caribbean Project Investment opportunities in the Public and Private Sectors. He also served as Senior Consultant Advisor in the Office of the Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. Mr. Butler is frequently accessed to provide strategic advisory services on policy and legislative initiatives throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. He is the Founding Chairman of the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF), the largest and oldest Caribbean Event for renewable energy stakeholders. He served as Chairman of the Latin American Caribbean Council on Renewable Energy (LAC - ACORE) Advisory Board; Consultant on the World Bank Caribbean Entrepreneur (EPIC) SME Program; Deputy Chairman of the Bahamas Securities Commission; and Director of a significant Caribbean insurance company. His professional experience in public accounting, wealth management and financial services spans over thirty (30) years in New York, Europe, and the Caribbean. He holds an MBA from the University of Miami (Summa Cum Laude Class Valedictorian), a BSc in Computer Science from New York’s Manhattan College, and studied law at the University of the West Indies. He is a New York State CPA, a licensed Chartered Accountant, Building Contractor, Financial and Corporate Services Provider (FCSP), Realtor, and is a Certified IAAF Coach in Track and Field Sports. 

Sally Yearwood has been the Executive Director of Caribbean Central American Action since 2011, after rejoining the organization as Deputy Executive Director in 2008. She had previously worked with CCAA from 1989-1995.  Over the years, her areas of focus have included energy security, maritime transportation, disaster management, Haiti, trade policy, and financial services, among many others.  Ms. Yearwood’s career spans more than 25 years working with the countries of the Caribbean and Central America. She spent 13 years in Haiti where her experience includes serving as the Trade and Investment Advisor for the U.S. Agency for International Development, managing projects for the Caribbean Export Development Agency, and serving as the Country Representative for the U.S. Department of Commerce. 

After graciously serving the University as interim president for more than a year, Dr. Frederick was inaugurated as the 17th president of Howard University on March 6, 2015. Dr. Fredercick is a scholar, surgeon, and researcher. The focal point of his research is to narrow the disparity in cancer-care outcomes between African-Americans and the larger population, particularly in the area of breast cancer. Dr. Frederick is most grateful that his matriculation, as a triple alumnus of Howard, allowed him to commit himself to the mission of Howard University.

In alignment with the Howard University mission and a personal desire to influence change, Dr. Frederick remains active within local and global communities. In January 2017, The Federal Reserve System Board of Governors elected Dr. Frederick to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Baltimore Branch. In May 2016, he was appointed to the Board of Advisors for the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Dr. Frederick was also appointed to the Board of Advisors for the White House Initiative on HBCUs to provide the president and Secretary of Education advisory support.

Dr. Jan Yves Remy, a St. Lucian national, is a lawyer at Sidley Austin LLP (Washington and Geneva), working in the International Trade and International Arbitration practice groups. Her expertise lies in advising governments and private stakeholders on international trade matters, with a focus on dispute settlement under the auspices of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Before Sidley, Jan Yves worked as a legal officer at the Appellate Body Secretariat of the WTO in Geneva, where she assisted the WTO Appeal Tribunal in its disposition of appeals on matters under the WTO agreements. Before that, she worked as a services trade analyst at the Caribbean Negotiating Machinery (now Office of Trade Negotiations), where she represented the Caribbean in multilateral, bilateral and regional negotiations. 

Simone Williams is founder and Managing Attorney of Williams Global Law in Washington DC, where she represents international businesses and investors in matters relating to U.S. and global immigration, EB-5 investments, corporate formation and corporate compliance. Simone advises high net worth individuals and multinational companies on all aspects of U.S. immigration law, with a particular emphasis on global investment visa options to acquire temporary residency, permanent residency and foreign citizenship.  Simone also assists foreign investors and multinational companies with all aspects of establishing new operations in the U.S.  Prior to this role, Simone worked as General Counsel to an EB-5 Regional Center, an organization designated by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  In this role, she was in charge of a multi-million dollar immigrant investment fund and managed the immigration investment process for the company’s real estate and manufacturing projects and its foreign investors.  Before that, Simone worked as a Senior Associate at Baker & McKenzie’s Toronto and Washington DC office for eight (8) years, where she served as outside counsel to multinational corporations, Fortune 500 companies, and high net worth investors in all areas of U.S. immigration and global migration issues.
