WBA Foundation Approves Donation To Help Rebuild Grace House Orphanage in Haiti
Anxious to directly help the people of Haiti after its devastating earthquake, the WBAF Board of Directors promptly designated $5,000 from the Foundation's grant funds to assist a non-profit that works with Haitian children, The Grace House of Hope for Girls, near Port-Au-Prince. Grace House operates two orphanage homes as well as a school serving indigent girls. Its orphanage for girls was destroyed, and the little girls are living outdoors. Photographs of Grace House before and after the earthquake give only an idea of the extent of the need there.
Please consider making a donation to Grace House, and to do so by directing your Haiti giving to the WBA Foundation in order to make a concrete and direct difference. While most of us cannot be with these children, holding them and providing for their daily needs as we might wish, direct and targeted giving also serves them well. We worry about how Haiti will rebuild. We know how critical it is to support the good charitable agencies that have been there for years, that are on the ground and best equipped with the talent to help stabilize the social fabric of life. At the same time, the Haitian orphanages now face astounding crises, needing to serve many more children newly orphaned by the earthquake.
The Kirkland & Ellis Foundation (K&EF) brought Grace House for Girls to the WBAF, and has met with representatives of the entity that will be channeling these gifts to Grace House. It has worked for years with Grace House and other Haitian organization such as Feed My Starving Children, Food for the Poor, and the Lazarus Project. K&EF's own gift, including some information about Grace House, are described at the links below. The WBAF thanks the firm's foundation and our Board member, K&E partner Ellen Jakovic, for giving us this opportunity to make a direct and sustained difference. Questions may be directed to Carol Montoya, WBAF Executive Director.
The WBAF's gift to Grace House serves its mission by helping an organization that serves indigent and at-risk children. The Foundation, a sec. 501(c)(3) organization, is the charitable arm of the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia.

Although you may already have donated to the Haitian relief effort, please consider donating again. The devastation is vast and it will take months, perhaps years, for the country to recover. Aid is needed both immediately and for the long term.
